Tipping in Burundi can be a bit confusing as its not a common tourist destination. Service charges are never included in prices but some may expect a tip while others won’t. Taxis: Tipping taxi drivers in Burundi is not expected, but if it was a pleasant ride then you should round up.
Hotels: Tipping in hotels isn’t common and isn’t expected. If a staff member goes above and beyond a small token is a nice gesture. Such as a bell boy bringing your luggage up to your room.
Restaurants: Service charge isn’t included in Burundi. You should tip up to 10% depending on the service and the quality of the restaurant you went to. Usually for higher end restaurants a tip is expected. While for a basic eatery no tip is expected at all.
Bars: Tipping bartenders in Burundi isn’t common. Don’t expect to tip unless you receive table service.
Other: If you are taking an organized tour in Burundi than usually you should expect to tip the driver and guide about 5-10% each. This is all dependent on the quality received from the guides. Remember not to be too flashy with your money and valuables though. Burundi isn’t the safest country and one should always take caution when traveling on their own.
