Tipping in China is becoming more common as traveling increases. China’s economy is growing rapidly and traveling is becoming more and more common. China is home of the Great Wall and has a wide range of temples to see and visit across the country, don’t miss out on the great cities in China either, such as Beijing and Shanghai. Tipping is still new though and sometimes discouraged so use your tipping guide below to see when you should trip as you travel across China.
Taxis: Not required and could be considered insulting to some.
Hotels: In high end western hotels you may be expected to tip. This would be a few dollars a bag and few dollars a night for the maid. You should check to see if you are paying for a service charge though. In normal hotels tipping is not required or necessary.
Restaurants: In high end western restaurants you may be expected to tip. This should be about 10-15% of the total bill. You should check to see if you are paying for a service charge though. In normal restaurants tipping is not required or necessary.
Bars: Similar to restaurants, you should only expect to tip in high end bars. This should be about 10% of the bill, service may already be included though so please check.
Other: Besides high end western restaurants and hotels the only time you should expect to tip is when doing a tour. The tour guide and driver usually rely on the tip as their main source of income. You should tip the guide the equivalent of $7-$10 and the driver between $5-$7 for full day tours. If its a private tour then you should double this.
